During Sunday’s American Idol episode on ABC, Katy Perry made a bold fashion statement by donning a skintight Elastigirl costume while celebrating Disney Night. The 38-year-old pop superstar had missed the previous week’s episode but returned with a bang by wearing the iconic red-and-black family superhero costume from Pixar’s 2004 film, The Incredibles, and its 2018 sequel, Incredibles 2. In order to get into character as Mrs. Incredible, Katy sported a red wig with a retro 1960s style, and her accurate costume was completed with a black eye mask. Along with fellow judges Lionel Richie, 73, and Luke Bryan, 46, Katy revealed her Disney Night costume at the start of the two-hour live show. Katy has been a judge on American Idol since 2018, starting in season 16, which was the show’s first on ABC after having aired for 15 years on Fox.
Since its transition to ABC, American Idol has included a Disney Night in its lineup. Pixar Animation Studios, which became a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios in 2006, produced the popular movie, The Incredibles. This animated film features Helen Parr, also known as Elastigirl and Mrs. Incredible, who is voiced by the talented actress, Holly Hunter. She portrays the mother of three super-powered children alongside her husband, Bob Parr, who goes by the name of Mr. Incredible.
During the Disney Night episode, Katy complimented Wé Ani, who is 23 years old, by calling her “incredible” after her initial performance. Standing next to host Ryan Seacrest, Wé expressed her gratitude by addressing Katy as “Mrs. Incredible.”
During their visit to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Wé and her mother Jackie teamed up with a costumed Mrs. Incredible to get into the Disney spirit before the Disney Night episode. This episode showcased the top five contestants remaining in the competition and included Katy Perry also dressed up in a Disney-themed costume. The night also featured a performance by Halle Bailey, who sang “Part of Your World” from the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid.
During their time at Disneyland and rehearsals with Disney star Sofia Carson, the five finalists appeared to have an enjoyable time with their families. Katy Perry had a funny moment last season during Disney Night when she fell out of her chair while dressed as Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Wearing the rigid costume made it difficult for her to walk, and she needed assistance from fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, as well as host Ryan Seacrest, as she took her seat at the judges’ table.
Katy was brought in on a dolly and assisted in getting into her chair, but unfortunately fell out of it while Ryan was introducing the first contestant. The delay of Disney Night this season was caused by judges Katy and Lionel traveling to England for their performance at King Charles III’s coronation.
The Disney Night segment kicked off with a performance by Sara Bareilles, who won a Grammy, along with the top five finalists singing When You Wish Upon A Star, a song from Disney’s Pinocchio. Katy Perry, dressed as Mrs. Incredible, had a heartfelt message to share on Mother’s Day. With one leg straddled across the judge’s table, she proclaimed that she was dedicating her performance to all the mothers out there.
Host Ryan made a humorous remark about the desk, saying that it would not be the same again. Meanwhile, Katy expressed her wish for better air conditioning in the room as she wore a tight-fitting outfit.
